hi all,
last winter i had the bonnet off and noticed that the hinges had a fair amount of lateral play. due to financial constraints i could not replace them at the time but this fall (before the salt flies!) the bonnet will come off for repainting. my question is; is there a way to reduce the amount of slop or do they have to be replaced? i have found them at moss and VB ($20 more at VB/unit) and am wondering about the quality. has anyone dealt with this before and what was the best approach?
i have searched this and not found much.
thanks in advance!

Hey Charlie, I have the same problem, I was thinking about taking the hinges off the car, it appears to be a large rivet thats the pivit point, maybe heat the rivit up and hammer it some to make it tighter and less lateral movement, and be careful I was only going to paint my hood and now into my 2nd week of stripping the entire car for a repaint

i have read your repainting thread with interest, but i hope that this does not turn into as much of an adventure as yours. with any luck, the body guy will be able to match the colours well enough. the rest of the body is in for a cutting and polishing in order to refresh paint that is pushing 18 yrs old (still looks good, though).
the hinges are a source of annoyance as the roads are generally crap up here and the hood squeeks over bumps.
have you thought of replacing yours?
good luck!

I'm not sure if I'm understanding correctly, but your problem may not be the hinges. My hood also seemed to have a lot of side to side play, but it was really because of the worn and/or missing rubber wedges. I think the movement is limited by snuggly fitting rubber wedges along both fenders. -I'm not seeing why 'lateral play' in the hood while it is open, would be an issue.

Mine used to move enough for a squeek to be heard coming from the hood prop rod in it's holder. Just a thought...

true, but i did check into this and found that if i lift the hood on each front corner, id say that there is at least 1/4" of up and down wiggle room. all of the rubbers around the front end were renewed last winter in order to try to get rid of the movement. me thinks the hinges are worn out.
