What type of battery came stock with the 71'TR6? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/patriot.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif

Early ones came with the tar-topped Lucas, I do think that later ones had more "modern" batteries though. I have an Optima gel and can't say enough good things about it. Moss even makes (I bought my Optima locally, much cheaper) a fake tar-top cover for the Optima if you want the look.

You say Moss has the Optima gel
Are there different types or are they generic?

which one Should I purchase?

If you get an Optima battery for heavens sake don't get it from Moss.

Check out Summit, Jegs or one of the other big spares suppliers. You ought to be paying about $129 for the thing, not $198. (You can find it cheaper online, but total with the shipping charges before you buy - Summit or Jegs just charge a $10 "handling" fee).

I bought one yesterday, scheduled delivery for me is tomorrow. Yellow Tops were backordered, but I had a bunch of other stuff I needed so went with the red. I got a 34/78, which ought to be plenty big enough.

You can buy the Optima Gel from Moss if you like. If you like money, you can buy the same exact Optima (red top) Gel from anywhere else that sells them. I paid about 100 bucks from Advance Auto. The batteries are all the same. You will have to make up a bracket to hold the Optima. I used a piece of angle iron and a piece of strap steel, welded them together, shaved a few ridges off the back of the battery, glued some rubber sheeting to the back and sit the battery on two sheet of 1/4" rubber for cushion. Notice no more battery box!

looks great!
ill have to shop around 1st
thanx for the heads up about Moss...

is there any difference between the red and yellow besides the color?

Unless you have a massive stereo, fuel injection (through an ECU which wants a lot of power) or some other power hog, a regular red top ought to be fine.

i do have a power 1200w amp for the stereo, i suppose that could suck up alot of juice..

not pi, webber dgv's

webers dont use electricity last i checked...
do you run the stereo full bore with the engine off for long periods of time?

no i dont run the stereo that loud, but i do notic some flux in the amp meter when I have the lights and strereo on at the same time, I did replace the alternator

the webers only draw a very little current for the electric choke.....

Hello Bill,

just a point about your battery installation; it is better to have the terminals away from the securing strap rather than adjacent. Depending on the construction of the battery, there is not much clearance and if the battery does move it can short against the strap.

Just a note... AGM batteries are a regular topic on the Miata Forum (Yeah, I know...I've gone to the "Dark Side"). Optima's are a favorite, but another alternative is the Westco, or Autozone's Duralast.
I prefer to buy my batteries locally, because of warranty, and replacement issues. I had a really BAD experience with a company out of Nebraska, called BatteriesRus, so I'd "warn" you away from them.
Take care Bob

I'm using a Westco AGM in my MGB. I love it; about half the price of an Optima. Do a search on the MG area for AGM (posted about two months back).
