TR6 tr6 alternator

I've got a '72 TR6 that I bought about five months ago, and I've slowly been making progress in getting this thing running well. A combination of not much time, and not much knowledge.

Has anyone tried installing a 55 amp Bosch alternator in a TR6? I found a post on the Vintage Triumph Register about how easily a 78-80 Ford Fiesta alternator fits in a TR6.

My concern is: would I have a problem in installing a 55 amp alternator in a car in place of a 28 amp unit?

Thanks for your help!

An alternator will only put out what the car demands of it. My only real concern would be the gauge of the primary wire. You want something thick enough to handle 55A. I want to say you can use 8 or 10 gauge wire and that would be plenty, but check with someone that knows for sure.

I know a number of GT6s with the GM Delco alternator, including mine. The GT6 electics and engine are not dissimilar to the TR6, so maybe the installation directions from Paul Tegler's website would suffice for your 55 amp one.

Go to teglerizer.com and look for the GM Delco swap piece.

Just a guess, if anyone can correct me on this please do so. The GM alternator works like a charm in my GT6, no more lights dimming at idle, etc.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Okay...

I may have jumped the gun... In driving the car, the amp meter never really seems to jump up very much. I'm not sure if it is overcharging! In looking at the battery, it's from 1997. I'll have to check that out, and get a meter on the alternator, to see what's happening.

I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the comments!
