TR4/4A TR4A Wheel Stud Removal

I'm converting my '67 TR4A IRS from wires to Panasports, and have questions about the rear wheel studs. Are the studs on the IRS cars peened on the back? I read the thread on this forum, but couldn't understand if the IRS TR4A's are different from the solid axel TR4A's. I also understand the front studs are pressed in, is this correct? I would appreciate any info or tips before I dive into this. Thanx.

For the 4A IRS I believe they are all pressed in. You can check pretty quickly, just feel on the back of the hub, the pressed in stud has a pretty obvious shoulder, the threaded and peened in ones do not.

Interesting. The local British car shop sent me 4 press in type studs and 4 threaded studs. The tech guy at Moss said the threaded studs are for the back.

When I replaced a rear stud on my Spit I just tapped it with a mallet and it slid right out. I've tapped these as hard as I dare and they didn't budge. Sort of makes me wonder what those TR engineers were thinking.

My solid axle '4A uses pressed-in studs. Sounds like yours are just frozen. Try heating 'em. Hmmm, or maybe I'm thinking of my old TR6...

The 4A IRS setup originally was pressed in, but the live axle 4A I think had threaded just like the 3's and 4's. But again, I think its pretty simple to inspect the back of the hubs and you'll know exactly what you have.

It looks like these have been peened. Sounds like the idea now is to simply grind off the peening and back the stud out. Of course I'm leaving for a trip today so it will have to wait until next week.

No need to feel behind; the threaded-in studs also have a collar that can be seen on the face of the hub.

If you truly found a threaded-in stud on an IRS hub, I would consider replacing the entire hub. Triumph never built them that way, so someone has threaded the knurled hole. Those threads (and that bit of peening) are the only thing holding the wheel to the car; not a place for bodging, IMO.

I'll check some of my spare rear axles, but the part number for disk wheels (132317 - I got to use my new TR4A SPC!) is the same part number for TR4A IRS and TR6 rear axles according to TRF.

Any luck getting yours out?

I checked all 4 spare TR4A IRS rear axles that I have and they are all pressed in so if yours are peened then it sounds like someone replaced them at some point with the wrong kind.

Two of my spare axles already had the studs knocked out and you can see the knurls and beveled shoulder on the back. The other two axles still have the studs installed and I can say that the head is pretty thin.

They were, in fact pressed in all the way around. Crisis averted. Thanx for the info!
