TR6 TR4A - TR6 clutch pressure plate???

Borg & Beck versus Laycock any one with an opinion. Is one better than the other?

From what I've read, it appears that there are several different B&B plates sold for the TR6, and most of them are wrong. The right B&B plate appears to be fine; but IMO it's easier to go with the Laycock/Luk and avoid the confusion.

Ah, here it is : Brent Kiser of Minnesota Triumphs (an ME from Purdue) wrote that he contacted AP Automotive (who makes the B&B plate or at least did in 2001) and was told that the B&B plate he got from TRF, P/N HE5132Q, was designed for a Saab and only recommended for TR6 with modified engines. B&B P/N HE4787Q appears to be the correct plate.

Listed in order of preference: Sach's, LUK, and at the very, VERY bottom of the list B&B. I would go for a Koyo T/O bearing. I believe TRF's magic clutch kit is using Sach's/Koyo units.

Or you can get a Kevlar Spec Stage 2.. Yeah!!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

And where does one find this latest object to throw money at?

Also, what about the "trick" setup from TSI, Ted Schumacher?

Anyone know about that setup?

I got turned on to these fellows by Bob Lang on the 6-pack. The clutch won't be listed on their website, you have to call. The Kevlar clutch will be able to take anything my little TR engine can throw at it and should last longer than the car.

I've been running the clutch for about 6 months now along with the HVDA hydraulic clutch. 100% better pedal feel than the old system.

Yeah, I'm insane.

I have an early TR6 gearbox in my TR4A. I used the TRF Magic Kit with the Toyo TO bearing...not positive by think it may have had the Sach's pressure plate. Worked as advertised, pedal feel just right, and would buy it again.

Cheers

Shannon,

So, before I assume anything, how do you like the HVDA hydraulics? Was it an easy conversion?

I currently have a TRF Magic clutch and I'm happy with it, but I'll put new in the new engine.

Don't get paranoid. We're all a little insane or we wouldn't be here talking about this kind of stuff.

Paul,

I really like the HVDA hydraulic T/O bearing. With that being said, you have to re-teach yourself how to drive the TR after the installation. You only have to depress the pedal just a little bit in order to dis-engage the clutch unlike using about 3/4th of the pedal before the install. The engagement is butter smooth but feels very different than the old setup.. not bad, just different. More like a new car.

The installation is really no more difficult than a regular clutch.. but you have to be careful with the measurements that you take... mess that up and you blow the seals in the bearing. Just to be sure, I did the required measurements like 10 times because I really don't want to take that blasted gearbox out again. If you install the gearbox while the engine is out of the car, the install would be super easy.

The best part is Herman Van Den Akker, he made himself available several times to answer my crazy questions. He's a very smart and dedicated Triumph guy.
