TR4/4A TR4A - Torque the Front Suspension Trunnion Bolt!

I had an elusive front end shimmy for some time, and tried most everything to alleviate it.

Rebuilt Front suspension with axle spacing kit, rebuilt steering Rack with new rack bushes, new Steering Column Bushes from rack to wheel with new felt securing the column, balanced wheels and shaved tires, etc.

Turns out that the workshop manual for the 4/4A has incorrect instructions for installing the lower trunnion bolt....I knew the 4A has the TR250- TR6 front suspension, but was not aware that the trunnion bolt should be torqued to 50-65 lbs.

After torquing the shimmy is 95% gone, and its a pleasure to cruise on the highway again!

What are you running for wheels? Wire wheels can cause vibrations too. When I switched to Panasports in 1998 my vibrations went away. Much smoother ride now. Yes they were balanced and the spokes were tight.

Check ball joints and tie rod ends too, if you haven't already. know you said you rebuilt the front suspension but I don't know if what u said included those components

Yes I have wire wheels, and the bit of shimmy I have left is likely due to the wires...having the tires shaved really did help, fortunate to find a shop that still has the machine.
