I was wondering if some early TR4As used the same rear attachment for the convertible top as the TR4s.
Below is a picture of the rear attachment on my early 4A. It consists of the same trim strip and lift-the-dot fasteners as the TR4s, but the frame and everything else is 4A. I suppose it's possible that someone may have replaced the original top and rear attachment early in the car's life--maybe got a good deal on a used TR4 top and its trim.
I also remember replacing the top on my TR4A back in the 1960s. I don't remember a lot about it, but I do remember installing a bunch of lift-the-dot fasteners. I'm quite sure I didn't attach the top to a retainer bar. Or, maybe I'm hallucinating--we did that a lot in the 60s.
FWIW, Piggot's book says that all TR4As had the 4A-style top.
Anyone have any insight on this? I guess it doesn't really matter, as I'm installing the 4A retainer bar anyway, but I'm curious.
