I give up, Need help!

Car still smells gasoline but can not find problem...yes, have looked and wiped everything. Car runs well although at higher rpm when idle cold and lower rpm on idle warm.
I will now work on carbs, but have questions. What really needs to be replaced when one knows little about carburator problems. I assume all O rings, gaskets, and everything on top of the mixture adjustment?? How about the piece shown on Moss catalogue ( item 24, screw , bushing retainer ) between the jet and the mixture adjust. How about the diaphram although it looks perfect?. How does one tell if the needle is worn, or anything.

Sorry about the many questions. Not trying to save buck . I know, replacing everything may be a good practice...but I hate to waste even with a hobby. Again, thanks for any opinions or advise.

If your only problem is leaking there are three O-rings for each carb on the mixture adjusting piece as shown in the Moss catalog, plus the gasket for the float housing, those would be your most likely spots for leaks, diaphragms will last pretty well, but if torn or leaking at all will mess up your running characteristics all to heck, if they look good with no cracks and the car is running OK you probably don't need to replace them, and if they are bad or turn out to be bad they are easy to replace with the carbs in place, so if you don't want to waste keep the old ones.

The only other thought is the float valve isn't working right, allowing the carbs to overflow.

I am rebuilding some TR4A Stormbergs right now, and purchased the O-rings, diaphagms (mine were bad) and throttle shafts.

Jedi, when the float causes an overflow, how does one know? Is is how the engine behaves only? Or does it spill out so it stains or drips. If so, where to?. My garage smell gas, but can I see nothing, and my engine runs still fine!

I had these carbs rebuilt six years ago at Apple Hydraulics, thus the reason I did not want to replace everything again, regardless.

Take the air filters off and take a look - the overflow vent to the carbs goes to the filters - so you may see some leaking in the front. At least on my TR4 when I had a stuck needle valve I had gas gushing out of that area.

actually if the fuel level is too high it my come out the front throat as well - likely flowing past the jet and needle.

Have you checked the gas line itself as well as the 2 rubber hoses between the tank and the pump. The one rubber hose at the pump as well. Those can deteriorate and weep gas. It doesn't take much for the smell to get in the garage. What about the bottom of the tank? Pin holes can develop there too.
 
I had a car that was long dormant so i don't know what the carbs were doing beforehand but I sent the carbs off to be rebuilt at Apple. When they came back fuel poured out of one from around the choke only when the choke was engaged. I sent them back but that never got resolved. It's temperate here so I just use the choke on the other carb until I get around to sorting out that problem. However, the symptoms were similar - strong gas smell but no apparent leakage point until I had both the bonnet open and choke engaged at the same time. Not offering a solution here but a possible cause.
