TR4/4A TR4A Rear Brake Shoe Installation

Another thread got me wondering, so I removed my brake drum. My brake shoes are top and bottom, not front and rear.

Do I have a problem here?

Do I need to remove the entire plate from the hub assembly and rotate it 90 degrees?

That won't be a lot of fun with the hydraulic line already installed and fitted.

What difference would it make? Thanks
 
I'll be interesed in hearing opinions on this. My first thought was 'not good'... but my second thought was that I couldn't see how it would make any difference (assuming the handbrake cables function okay which I suppose they would).
 
Thx, Geo. I checked the other side and it's identical, but reverse of course. It certainly "looks" factory. I, too, have been trying to figure out what difference it would make.
 
I would have to agree. As long as the hand brake functions properly it should be the same. You might get a little more brake dust accumulation hanging up around the lower shoe.
 
Here is what the rear brakes (10" drums) onmy my TR3A have looked like for the last 49 years.

I suspect as long as the bleed screw is in an optimal position(at least as high as any other space or void in the cylinder to let out trapped air effectively when bleeding) then the rest of it should not make much of a difference. I just to a quick look upside down at my nine inch brakes and I think its the same orientation as Don's, which puts the bleed screw up.
 
Peter - They have "looked like this" for 49 years. I didn't say they were the same linings. I replaced them once in 1990 after 80,000 miles and I have driven another 94,000 miles since then on the ones in the photo. As for the front disk brake pads, I changed those at 43,000 from new and have driven 141,000 miles on the 2nd set. I have the car up on jack-stands at the moment. I put in all new front suspension, new idler arm, etc and have installed new front brake pads. I'll let you know in 25 years how good these last ones are.
