TR4/4A TR4A original commission plates?

All,

Does anyone else have any pictures of original TR4A commission plates? I noticed that the ones sold by TRF have a couple of small differences at least compared to the 2 examples that I have. The originals only have "COVENTRY" on the bottom line while the reproductions have "COVENTRY, ENGLAND. The originals also have "THE STANDARD MOTOR Co LTD" while the reproductions have "THE STANDARD TRIUMPH MOTOR Co Ltd.".

I've sent Albert at TRF some pictures of mine (see below) and was wondering if anyone else had some more examples I could send him. Note in my second one you can just make out the "TR" in the center for "CONVENTRY" and a few of the letters in the same positions for "THE" and "MOTOR"

Here's the reproduction. Note this is one that I purchased from them back in 1984/1985 and it looks like it hasn't changed based on the drawing in the latest web special catalog.

Albert mentioned that the reproductions match some of the pictures of originals in Piggott's Originality Guide so I found a used copy for a reasonable price so I could see which commission number they have (hopefully it will get here this week).

here's mine, which I believe is original, and the replacement I ordered last summer.

JD,

Thanks! So yours seems to be another variant which has "THE STANDARD MOTOR Co LTD" like mine but has "COVENTRY ENGLAND". It also doesn't appear to have the weight stamped like mine and the reproduction have. Seems to indicate a change between CTC58489 and CTC69123.

That is my problem -- my original TR4 commission plate had the weight in KILOS but the repro typically sold has LBS. I have seen a Herald plate for sale in the UK that looks like what I need but for now I just settled for the LBS variety.

Here is my original plate, but I don't think it will help

Darrell,

 Yours looks like the one from my first car!

Regarding the stamping, on yours and my examples it looks like the CT and the first 4 numbers were stamped together as they have consistent spacing and are level and that the rest were hand stamped. (Ignore the extra CTC stamps as the person that stamped my reproduction "practiced" on my original. :()

I'm curious if all TR4A's came with leather seats. Does anyone have one that does not have an "H" in the trim code?

Geo,

Is yours similar to JD's with no stamped weight? We can't tell on his but I was wondering if it used KILOS as Albert indicated the picture in Piggott's book had KILOS also.

Yes, appears the same from the limited amount of original text on his and mine. You can just barely see the remains of 'KILOS' on mine:
