Re: TR4A No PCV Valve OK?
I have experienced issues where the stock PCV cannot keep up and process the volume of blow-by on my TR4A. This particular car also has the vented oil filler cap. It resulted in crankcase pressurization and oil leaks.
I now run an open hose off the valve cover to vent the crankcase and closed the port on the intake manifold. It performs great - I barely get a drop of oil from the timing chain cover after an hour of driving (and nothing from the rear crank seal). But, I would still like to see the system perform as designed.
Next step will be a leak down test just to confirm I have no issues there. If that goes well, then I am considering modifying the PCV valve by drilling out the orifice in the body and replacing the internal spring with a stronger one. This should allow the PCV to process a larger volume of gasses under slightly more vacuum.
I'd be curious if anyone else has ever run an original but modified PCV or substituted a universal replacement.

PS: No doubt, this PCV system was of a poor design from the start. I have researched it thoroughly and found no less than 8 Leyland-Triumph technical service bulletins on this very topic spanning from Jan 1965 to mid 1966. They were obviously struggling to get it right.
