TR4/4A TR4A???? Monstrosity on the "bay"

Re: TR4A???? Monstrosity on the "bay"

Ah yes, we've seen this before.

I'm going to be in the Bay next week, maybe I should go see it.

A no-reserved auction. This baby's gonna sell!! I've definitely got this one on my "watch" list.

Re: TR4A???? Monstrosity on the "bay"

God Bless those who buy this "THING"!!

Re: TR4A???? Monstrosity on the "bay"

In all honesty, the thing looks horrible! Whoever designed the square back top with the limo window, should have taken a lesson in sports car design. Painted gold with wide white wall tires, a furry leopard interior, it'd probably sell pretty quick in the right part of town! Sorry but, JMHO. PJ

Re: TR4A???? Monstrosity on the "bay"

I have seen this in the past.

Please, could someone go out there and put this collection of flea market floatsam out of its misery. I can almost smell the cheap cologne!

Just hideous.

Re: TR4A???? Monstrosity on the "bay"

Aaron: If you find another one of these please don't bother to post it here. I can't take the shock any longer.

Re: TR4A???? Monstrosity on the "bay"

If I'm not mistaken the owner actually posted some messages on the Forum -- gotta hand it to him for stepping up.

Not my cuppa tea and certainly not for the shy retiring types either.

Show up at Triumphest in that and you will get to meet everyone.

Re: TR4A???? Monstrosity on the "bay"

I think the first thing to do is source the parts for a convertible top(or maybe a Surrey Top) and then get a sawzall and cut that top off. Then get a new interior kit & seats (velour? who thought that was a good idea?) and then new trunk lid and 4 new fenders.

Haha. Sorry Frank. It was just one of those things like, "Hey, this tastes terrible! Try it!".

Why would someone do such a thing?
As Triumph enthusiast, it seems sacrilegious to us that someone would do this to a "collectible" car. But it was probably done a while back when it was not yet a collectible, or it could have been a total basket case and someone decided to do something a little outrageous with it. (C'mon, check some old pictures of yourselves in the seventies---why would anyone dress like that or wear their hair like that?!) People do a lot of strange things with many different cars. Triumphs are not exempt. This car may be more restorable now than if it had sat in a back yard for three decades rusting away waiting for the funds or motivation to do a frame-off. And the seller is clearly not the one who did the mods, so we can't hold it against him. Just my two cents (which are probably only worth one cent!)
Now, having said all that, I will admit the obvious--it DOES look like something Eddie Munster would drive...when he grew up to be a pimp!

ps I am close enough to go test drive for any interested parties!

That's good to know... I wonder if a suit like this comes with the auction:

That said, one could have just bought one of these and essentially had the same thing:

There was an E-type for sale at British Car Day years ago. I was painted a horrible purple metal flake color. Everyone gathered around made fun of it, but the seller said, "Laugh all you want, but at least the paint protected it from rusting away."

Re: TR4A???? Monstrosity on the "bay"

I just bid on this thing as a joke for a business associate out that way

And now for the awaited reply, direct from Monterey CA

" WOW! Let me see…how to contain my enthusiasm…

Like the headroom…oh the position of the spare, a continental attribute…love the exhaust, you know me lots of noise! But not in the boudoir…what a wonderful pimpmobile, all crushed velour, red no less! And you could just sleep, I’m sure, on wool carpets in the back room, with shelves for personal items! No need for seatbelts here. And how fitting for an English car…the wiring is…well…just about perfect, I mean, it’s clear all the lights work, so luminescent. Fabulous engine refit…it’s like you are getting 4 more mistreakes! And with all that power, you need an instrument cluster befitting an aeroplane. Fender flares…reminds me of my racing days...unforgettable! What marvelous personalization…MT surely means My Triumph. The colour…my heart just skipped a beat!

Gosh Tony, I just don’t think I am worthy of such a machine…hmmm, I wonder if it stops..." D. Renard
