TR4/4A TR4A Front Suspension Bracket

My 66 TR4A has a bent right side aft front suspension bracket. Looks like a PO only installed half of the reinforcing kit. Is this the typical result of a pothole slam? Yow!

Some extra shims were installed and the wheel appears to be aligned straight. My immediate goal is to get the car to presentable driver status, and I'll decide whether to proceed with a full restoration later.

Is the only sensible option to cut the bracket out and weld in a new one? I'm tempted to hammer it straight and reshim assuming I don't find any cracks when I clean it up, but...

Thanks,
-Tom

I think, if it were mine, I would order those reinforcing plates and remove and re-weld that part. You appear to have things well enough apart, and you might later wish you went these extra steps. It seems like a lot of work now, but might be a quick fix for a decent welder. When I post questions here about alternative means of proceeding, it's sometimes because I want someone to talk me out of something easy. But, once in awhile there's a saint here who let's me go the easier way.

I agree with KVH, fix it the right way. I would replace the bracket, even if you bend it back in shape it will be weaker than before, and that is a weak area to begin with. Also consider replacing the bracket that attaches to the arm with the two-bolt version, and using a backing plate behind it.

You make good points, it is a weak spot and it would sure be harder with the engine in the way. I'm convinced. Thanks for your advice.
