That's pretty much exactly what I did with my Herald, and it seems to have been quite successful. Toughest part was finding an adhesive...and I'll be darned if I remember what I ended up using!

ISTR I used black weatherstrip adhesive last time; but I've also used exterior grade household "adhesive caulk". Both seemed to work fine.
Might be best to lead the bottom edge of the plastic inside the door and then glue between it and the door. That way there won't be a little pocket there to collect water and mold.
