TR4A Clunk - What's the "go to"?

Hi all,

I have some clunks in my TR4A. It's when I'm starting off. There are several clunks in a row, and at cruising speed, it does not happen. Sometimes if I'm going really slow in second gear the car starts to jerk back and forth slightly, too.

What I do NOT think it is:
-Differential mounts - checked them recently, everything was recently replaced, everything was strong in that section of the car.
-Rear transmission mount - replaced under my watch
-Wire wheel splines - just checked and greased etc.

Are there any "go to's" with this car? (example, when I had my MGB, I had to replace thrust washers in the diff...it's a very common problem and there is a kit for like $27 to fix it).

On a lift, supporting the frame, getting under there and twisting and turning things did not yield any results.

My idea was to support the rear swing-arms instead to simulate weight being on the car - maybe the problem will be more evident in this scenario.

I am planning on checking U-Joints - there are 6, correct? Also, slip joints. Obviously I'll "double check" the diff mounts because I'm in there but I really do not suspect that to be the issue as I've only driven the car 50 mi since I checked them.

Another noteworthy thing is that I completely rebuilt the front suspension. Although, I do not suspect this to be an issue in the front of the car, I just wanted to note it.

Thanks in advance!!!

Have you checked for muffler pipes hitting the frame?

I have no knowledge of the 4A however on the 6 the rear hubs are problematic... you might check them on your car.

Probably worth checking - they didn't innovate much! LOL.

You may want to check your rear axle splines. If they've become dry they can tend to bind and give the symptoms that you're describing. Lube them up well with gray moly grease and that may help your problem.
