TR4/4A TR4A BMIHT certificates

So flush with the money from my tax refund, I went ahead and splurged and got the BMIHT certificates for my 2 TR4A's to join the one I had gotten last year for my TR3A.

As I suspected, I've had to change my signature to show that my 1967 TR4A is really a 1966 TR4A (Date of build was August 31, 1966). This car is in very original condition with original paint (and rust!) so no real surprises otherwise. All the numbers match (engine and body) as well as the colors (Triumph Racing Green, black leather trim and a black top). Factory fitted equipment is listed as heater, Michelin X tyres, black tonneau cover, wire wheels, overdrive and independent rear suspension. I was surprised to see the key numbers listed as well. The certificate also lists that it shipped into Baltimore on the Milora.

Now the certificate on my original 1966 TR4A wasn't quite as informative. The numbers all matched although they added an H to the engine number (HE). The car is still Royal Blue but the certificate reminded me that the interior was originally Matador Red (I lucked out and got a Shadow Blue interior from a wrecked TR4A when I restored the car). For top, they list it as Not Applicable for some reason. Date of build was May 9, 1966, but the date of dispatch isn't listed and the destination is only shown as USA (no dealer and no ship information). They do show the factory fitted equipment as heater, independent rear suspension, 165 Michelin X tyres and wire wheels.

Just thought I would pass on what type of information came on mine especially that the information on the one wasn't as complete as on my other 2 cars.

A refund is when you have two good incomes and lose one job due to your job moving out of state and the economy is such that there simply are no jobs to be had (except ones that you are "overqualified" for.)

We've had a refund for the last 5 years. My job went from Maine to NY then to Spain.

Makes splurging on the TRs a bit difficult.

If that bugs you, you can contact them and discuss it. When I got a certificate for my Spit, I had the opposite problem. They left off the 'H' when it should have been there. I talked to an archivist there via email. He agreed it should be there, and sent me a new cert at no charge.

Perhaps they started keeping more detailed records over the summer of 66. My car, build date of 6 April 1966, despatched 20 April 1966, also only has a few details about the destination (Standard-Triumph Motor Company Inc., Los Angeles, U.S.A.). I do have the key numbers listed.

Of course, by the time I bought the car (1981), the engine, transmission, dash, at least 4 body panels, exhaust system and most of the interior were not original.

Jeremy,

Doesn't bug me really but does make me wonder whether any of the other information was just missed. However, according to the signature, the same person did both certificates the same day.

I did send them an e-mail asking about it so we'll see what they say.

Darrell,

Well mine only lists USA for the destination.

So your April car has more information than my May car. I would probably guess there are some missing records for the day my May car was built.

Guys be thankful you even have records on your TRs. I have a "retail" 1980 TR8 coupe that does not exist. The resords for the car before and after my VIN are there but not mine. Now bear in mind my coupe is one of the renumbered coupes from a different VIN series TCN15 to TCN16 so there maybe no records. I know the car is white......green & black disco check interior, AC, 5-speed car. AT this point with all the mods who cars about the certificate but goes to show that the older record keeping for Triumph Standard kicks Leyland Arsss!

BMHIT is sending me a new certificate. They reviewed the archives and corrected the engine number (no H) and found the top color so the only piece of information that's missing from this car which my other 2 have is the dispatch and shipping information.

They did ask me to destroy the first certificate when the new one arrives.

They asked me to do the same... I couldn't bring myself to do it.

I'm not sure what's the point other than it not being accurate.
