TR4/4A TR4 wiring harness

My TR4 project has been on hold for about the last two months as I patiently wait for the Roster Factory to rebuild a steering rack for me (three months and counting). In the meantime, I thought that I'd get started with laying out the wiring harness. Problem is I have no pictures or idea of where the harness goes in a TR4 (remember that I bought my car in pieces). So does anyone know where I can get detailed pictures of where and how the harness is laid out in the car? Where the harness passes through the fire wall, etc.? Anyone with a TR4 care to do a photo easy of their wiring system?

Helpful ideas appreciated /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I was in the exact same boat with my TR4A, in that I bought the car in boxes and had no clue where the wires went.

What I can tell you is that it is a simple job. What I did was lay out the harness on the ground and you will see that there is only one way for it to go in the car. If you stare at it on the ground long enough and play with it there you will find the final layout right there before you even start to put it in the car.

For me it was less then an evening's worth of work all total. (to be fair I am an electrical engineer so some things may have come as obvious to me). However I would suggest you just jump in and it will work out.

The one thing that is a must is the wire diagram from the manual. Make a copy of that and get a box of coloured pencils. Trace each circuit in a different colour and you will figure out the harness is no time flat.

No need to do that, I have already done it for you. Go to https://www.advanceautowire.com and click on the "stock schematics" button to download a copy of the wiring diagrams for your car which have been redrawn in color. You can take these to kinkos, Staples, etc, and have them printed in large format to make it easier to read. Some folks have had them laminated to hang on the garage wall.

I printed Dan's schematics on 13x17 heavy stock for each car. I also printed chassis diagrams and torque specs. I keep them under a sheet of plastic on my workbench so they won't get dirty. When I need one, I just put it on the top of the pile. It's great for wiring reference; if you want to add a new circuit change, just pencil it in.

My 4A came in boxes too, so I bought a $300 parts car that was complete but too far gone to restore. It really helped figure out where everything fit. I have pictures if you get stuck but my first recommendation is to find someone in you area with a TR4. Go to the next British car show and take picture too.

It's really not obvious how to route the harness if you have not clue to begin with.

So will it be obvious where to place the wires, run them through the fire wall? That's my major concern. Where they are placed in car/fastened in the car.

YES. For me it was obvious where to go through the fire wall and run the wires. Between the holes in the fire wall and the little metal tabs that hold the wires as they run along things, there was only one way to put the harness. When you do it, it will all become clear and you will wonder why you even worried about it. At least that is how I felt when I was done.

Feel like you're doing a jigsaw puzzle w/o the box lid?

My 64 TR4 has the original harness so it should be a good reference. I will take some assorted pics of the major paths of the loom and send them pmail. Let me know if there is an area in question that those pics do not cover.
