TR2/3/3A TR4 Wires to TR3

I've got a TR4 with wire wheels and would like them on my steel wheel TR3. The parts books seem to indicate the rear hubs will bolt to a TR3 but the fronts are a different part number. Will they work?

Thanks

How old is your TR3? If it has front disc brakes, then the TR4 wheels are a direct bolt-on affair; just shorten the studs or use spacers under the adapters. I would NOT try to swap the rear hubs (which is a major task), although you could swap the front hubs if you want.

I believe you can also install the adapters onto the earlier "Lockheed" axle (cars with front drum brakes), but there may be some fitting involved. In that case though, the rear hubs will definitely not swap (although the fronts might).

Hmm, I looked it up; I don't understand your comment about the front hubs being a different part number, unless you are looking at the early (Lockheed) front hubs. After TS13046 (introduction of front disc brakes), the TR3 used 114283/114284 hubs (the only difference is the length of the studs), which are the same numbers shown in my TR4 parts book.

Donnie,
Unless you have the early TR3, it will be a easy bolt on swap. The 60 spokes will work fine. As Andy mentioned and I strongly agree, buy a set of spacers and use them under the adapters, that way you can change back to steel wheels or aftermarket wheels whenever you want. Easy to cut off but a pain to replace the long studs later.

I swap between discs & wires on my TR3A & TR4 -- using some 1/4" or 6mm spacers:

I got them locally at a hot rod shop though I think some of the usual vendors may also have them.

I have a 1960 TR3 so the wheels should be a direct bolt on using the spacers? I'm assuming the rears will also work? As for the part numbers I was referring to a VB part number. I might have been looking at an earlier model.

Yep, that's all there is to it. You will, of course, need to use the bevel nuts designed for the wire wheel hub.

Also -- if your spare is still a disc wheel (mine is) be sure to carry a set of regular lug nuts and the appropriate wrenches for both sets of nuts.

Joe Alexander sells ( on ebay) a solid alum plate that is machine out very nicely for the adapter spacer. I've bought a couple of sets. They are great.
