Hi,
I need to have my trans/overdrive rebuildt and am looking
for a good repair shop in the Upstate NY area;
Albany-Buffalo.
Can anyone recommend a shop to call?
Thanks,
Jim

Quantum Mechanics is in Connecticut, which, I'm given to understand is kinda close to you. They are VERY well spoken of, hereabouts. Might be worth the trip/shipping.

Two places her in the fingerlakes are Empire Classics in Waverly. Stuart is a great engine man, and does mostly LBCs.. heavy on Jaguar. If he dosen't do trans work himself, I'd bet he's got good connections. the other would be Smallys garage in Watkins Glen. Yup, the same Smallys that's been fixing LBCs since they were first being imported and raced at the Glen. they may be a bit closer than Conn. But may not be as specialized as Quantum in trannies.

You can try Tom Smalley, he may be able to help you out with your gearbox and o/d (especially if they are already out of the car), but I can tell you that a few years ago he had no interest in working on my TR6 differential. At first he said he could do the work, but after having my car in his shop for 1.5 years he finally confessed that he wasn't interested in doing the work. I asked who he would recommend -- he named two other shops that would do the work, but he said he wouldn't recommend that I use either one. No hard feelings though -- this was at a time that I had no garage and he stored my car inside for 18 months, tuned the carbs, fixed a turn signal ground and gave me a state inspection, all for $10.

Another guy who may do the work or at least make some good recommendations is Art Lipp in Orchard Park. He races a TR4A. Although he seems to be focusing on his go-kart business, I would be shocked if he wasn't still involved Triumphs. I've got an email address for him if you are interested in contacting him.

I feel Triumph overdrives require an experienced hand. I can strongly recommend John Esposito at Quantumechanics. British drive trains are all he does, for the past 25+ years.

A year and a half ago I needed the diff in my IRS redone. Unbelievably I stumbled onto John in my own backyard (literally 15 miles from my house). His shop is stacked with tons of British drive line parts and the funky tools to service them. Also, I might mention that he had a load of work orders on his wall from many of the other popular vendors we all know and love. Clearly, they are sub-contracting to John.

FYI, typically, this time of year he is loaded-up with work from the racing community.

I'll add my endorsement of John E. & Quantumechanics. You are indeed fortunate to be as close to CT as you are, I had to ship the gearbox across a continent to take advantage of John's expertise.

I agree with the endorsment for John Esposito he's just awesome

Just make sure you have time to wait because he has a serious back log of work!!!!
