TR4/4A TR4 Shifter locking out

It does not happen all the time but it seems to happen when thr car warms up and I am shifting alot in traffic.The shift locks up and it won't go into any gear. I have to turn the car off and shift into first ,start it back up and it seems to be OK . Any ideas .Thanks
 
Well this can certainly happen when the clutch isn't fully disengaged, though usually it shows up initially in 1st and reverse, then 2nd.

Warming up, I think, can cause a marginal M/C to worsen. Next time try pumping the clutch pedal a few times and see if that helps -- not a solution but if it helps would suggest a problem in either the M/C or S/C.

We tend to get lazy feet when in traffic after a while and I've heard this before.

Where are you at in PA? I grew up in Johnstown. Are you anywhere near there?
 
Another possibility is if you are keeping your foot on the clutch pedal, and the hydraulics leak a bit. Since the leak might be past the main seal in the MC (back into the reservoir), you might not notice the leak otherwise.

My son is at college there and I hate the 219. How's the zippo lighter factory doing?
 
We all hate 219 !!! From what I understand Zippo is a bit slow,things could be better for them.On the other hand the oil/gas industry is booming around here,lot's of drilling.
 
What's the matter with 219? You don't want to have to drive the back roads from the turnpike to the Pitt campus in Richland. Leave a day early if you do. LOL!!!

I was back visiting my daughter/grandkids/family a few months ago and enjoyed the area a lot. It will be nicer next month with no snow and green trees.
 
The 219 from I80 to Bradford has some nice mountain passes, but on the flip side it also has many ridiculously slow sections where the local plod is waiting to have you add to the town coffers. Get stuck behind a logging truck and it can take forever to pass; I am not shy about passing, but most other cars on that road are, so you are also stuck behind them.
 
A friend of mine had a similar issue and it turned out to be the flexible hose going into the slave cylinder. We assume that when the engine and transmission warmed up the hose softened and was able to expand slightly, so the clutch didn't quite disengage.
