My rear differential leaks fluid (badly) past the front pinion seal. Is it possible to replace the seal without removing the differential? It seems like I should be able to drop the drive shaft, remove the cotter pin & nut, pull the shaft, and remove the oil seal. Has anyone done this before?

It is not all that hard, but space is tight. Mark EVERYTHING!!!! I count the number of exposed threads sticking out past the pinion nut, mark the flange, pinion shaft, and a flat on the nut. Everything must go back EXACTLY as it was before, or you will disturb the bearing preload, with possibly catastrophic results. Don't forget to refill the diff...

No, the pinion bearings are serviced thru the rear of the case. This requires a total teardown and rebuild.
