TR4/4A TR4 Radiator

I have a TR4 with a long neck radiator. Does anyone know if a TR4 radiator without the long neck will fit in the same sapce/mounting holes or is this a no go. I'm not very mechanical so I don't want to modify anything.Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I think the answer is yes on this one. There is a chance you may have to slightly widen a mounting hole, but it should drop right in. Just don't get a TR4A radiator, as that would be too wide.

The rad is leaking at the top at the weld just under the "long neck" .I'm sure it can be fixed but if I have to pull it out I want to put something newer in,maybe an aluminum ?

That is a common leak for this radiator -- combination of vibration and some POs habit of pressing down on the cap to tighten it w/o supporting the neck from underneath.

As you say -- can be fixed but if originality is not important then the no-neck variety is probably less of a problem. Whatever you go with (stock or other) if you eliminate the neck you may want to add an overflow/recovery bottle as you are giving up the built-in expansion tank of that long neck.

When I first fired up the barn find my radiator had a "weep" at the neck to top tank joint. As I wanted to see if there was anything more expensive that needed work I followed the advice of this forum and covered the joint with a smooth fillet of JB Weld. I have a 4 PSI rad cap and I didn't have any leaks for 18 months. I recently got the rad re-cored, not because it was leaking, but because I didn't want the chance of it happening at the wrong time.
