TR4/4A TR4 purchasing info please? With Pic's!

Hi all.
There is a local guy I know who is selling a 64 TR4, Its a bit rough, But i was curious if there is anything specific I should look for? Its been in storage for 20 years they say.
Thoughts?

Its all I have to go on so far.

Looks pretty good. Check for rust in the usual places, floorpans, sills, rear lip of the trunk lid,fenders near the lights. If the body is good that is probably the biggest thing in my mind, all mechanical issues can get worked out. Looks like badge holes on the hood as well as the trunk have been filled in, so you may find a little bondo.

Looks like an early-ish TR4, I'd guess earlier than 1964, given it has a long necked radiator, and I think one or two domed gauges. Might just be a mixture of parts acquired to keep the car going. Not a big deal unless you are trying to get back to 100% stock.

If its been sitting its hard to assess much else, I'm sure you will need to work over brakes and get the engine freshened up a bit before firing it up.

It looks like the fender beading is missing. If the joints between the fenders and tub have been filled I might offer a very low price.

You can find everything else on Ebay if you are patient.

Hi Brian,

I notice that the TR4 lettering is not on the Boot Lid nor any TR emblem on the Hood. There are no holes that I can see for the emblem or lettering.

What that tells you is there is probably a lot of Bondo in the car? One way of checking is get a strong magnet & run it across all areas.

The Engine compartment typ. should be Body Color so ???

Also; As Randy has mentioned. Those are the areas to look & also look at the underside of the doors; They tend to rot there as well. You "CAN`T" buy doors.

I always thought that the "Early" TRs had "SUs"; Not "Strombergs"? Not a big deal either.

Well, Honestly my friend is only asking $2700.00 for it, I will have to get a better up close look, Could this have an overdrive, If so where would the switch be located?

I have a paint magnet to check how thick the paint is on cars, I will bring that along.

should be a switch opposite the turn signal switch on the steering column - I don't see it in the picture, but it may be hidden by the steering wheel. Also, commission number will end in LO if it originally came with overdrive.

Look at the bottom of the fenders and sil sof any bubbling or bondo.

Inside the car, look at the front of the floors where the inner sills, floor pan, and firewall connect.

For that money she could be a steal if things check out!

I will add to check the saddle panel (with the gas cap in it) joints to the rear inner wings for paint bubbling due to rust; if the inner trunk panels aren't present look from inside as well. Also, underneath the battery.

Could those tires be original? They look like OE Michelin X to me.

Instead of a strong magnet, I use a weak magnet. I usually use one of those refrigerator business cards. It will stick well unless there is bondo in which case it will slide off the body surface. A strong magnet will stick irrespective of hidden Bondo.

The car looks fairly complete and a little tired. A great starting point IF the floors inner and outer sills and especially frame are solid. Rust is rust and don't get swayed by someone saying "surface rust" which usually means that it's not yet rusted all the way through. Either way rust must be fixed. So check carefully. Get it up on a lift if you can.
