TR4/4A TR4 Paint code website??

Hi Alex,

A few considerations....

First of all, the VTR site now seems to require a password (membership?).

Also, the registered year of a TR is often different from the build year. Knowing the build year is critical if trying to match original colors. You said '63, but are you sure?

For example, my '64 registered TR4 was actually built in October '62 (CT17602L) and the colors used in that year apply. Neither of those sites separately list pre-1963 colors for Triumph. However, the original Spa White of my car happens to be shown on Autocolor site, but not on the Paintscratch site.

In 1963 Triumph began using two digit numbers to indicate paint codes, and recorded them right on the registration plate of the car along with the VIN/chassis number and interior finish code. You can see the two digit paint codes next to some of the chips on Autocolorlibrary, and all the colors shown at Paintscratch. The colors without two digit paint codes (such as Spa White) are pre-1963 colors.

With pre-1963 TRs, the only foolproof way to determine original colors and trim of a car is to order a build certificate from BMIHT (https://www.heritage-motor-centre.co.uk/archive/certificate/default.htm)

Overall, I find the chart at Autocolorlibrary more useful and accurate of the two accessible sites. I happen to have an archive copy of the VTR paint chip chart, which is even better showing 30 colors from various years (compared to 15 at Autopaintlibrary and only 8 at Paintscratch). Email me if you want a copy of the VTR chip chart.

Cheers!

Alan
