Okay, this may not be everybody's cup of tea, but I was interested in a slightly different look for my TR4 interior and just installed this custom gearshift knob:
The main point of the note is to point out what I think is a pretty good source for gearshift knobs:
Epco
Epco makes bowling balls, pool table balls as well as the shift knobs, so you can kind of imagine the material. I think the quality of the knob is very good. Diameter at 1.6" is slightly bigger than the stock knob at around 1.4", but I like the slightly larger feel. The shift pattern is handy for when I take it into the shop and when I carefully let my son learn how to stick shift.
Terri at counter sales for the company was very friendly and had a charming East Coast accent. Between call and shipping it took about a week to get here. About $40 delivered, less without the engraving.
For anyone missing the stock TR4 knob, I think Epco's plain black one would be a pretty reasonable substitute, though I doubt it would fool the concours judges. As to my old shift knob, I'm storing it under lock and key in a hermetically sealed container to take out for shows or to fund my retirement on ebay in the distant future.
