TR4/4A TR4 Exhaust

I am getting to the point of needing to install am exhaust on my TR4. Does anyone have any experiences good or bad with the units out there? My son had some bad experience with exhaust for his MGB, some of them were not even close to being able to fit without serious work.

You may want to consider a stainless steel system. I have had one on my 250 for over 15 years and it's still perfect. I bought it from TRF.

Good luck

I have a 4A, with the dual outlet manifold and secondary pipes that merge near the starter.
From the merge I ran a mild steel pipe and used a free flow muffler, then a short tailpipe. The setup was put together by Midas Muffler who use a nice thick-wall pipe. Seems to work well and not too spendy.
Simon.

i got stainless for my 4a from trf, i had muffler guy install as even though supposed to fit he had to bend it. beyond my ability. don't know why a muffler shop couldn't just make you one. i didn't want the noise of abarth. most important to me was getting away from the standard set up the way mine came of muffler under the passinger plus two in back, while the two exhaust pipes looked cool, i didn't want the heat in the cockpit or the muffler under middle of the car to hit stuff.

I, too, went with TRF's stainless on my TR3. Bought it from them at the 1987 TRA and drove home with it stuffed in the passenger seatwell. Still looks great.

On the TR4 you may find that the fit through the cruciform is the fussy bit no matter whose system you get. Clearance there is tight and it took me some fiddling to keep it from touching or (worse) banging against the edge of that box.

I put the Falcon SS system on my buddies Italia and liked it so much, I bought one for my TR3B. Perfect fit in both cases. I am now saving for a kit for the TR4.

I use a Phoenix stainless system....wonderful noise and a great quality. The best I ever had.

I don't think Phoenix is sold on this side of the pond. I have heard very good things about Bell systems, but not sure where those can be bought.

Thanks for all the input. Tere is no need for SS for corrosion in So CAl. I don't ever remember replacing an exhaust for corrosion in 25+ years, but if the fit quality is better I will look at them.
Thanks again.

Alan

IMO the elimination of lead in fuel has dramatically cut exhaust corrosion anyway. My TR3A mild steel system from Moss lasted some 17 years.

When it finally did give up, I took thecar to a local muffler shop where they replaced the muffler for something like $40, installed (about 30 minutes). The Stag was more money and time (2 mufflers plus more fabrication; left the car overnight) but still less than just the shipping for a pre-fab system from the UK. In both cases, the results fit better than what they replaced.

Until that shop closes, I won't be bothering with pre-fab exhaust systems. Only downside was that I had to warn him not to weld things together on the Stag, since it's exhaust has to come off to put air in the tires
