TR4/4A TR4 exhaust options?

I tracked down my exhaust leak to a cracked muffler joint. For now I'm trying out some exhaust sealer and will see how well it holds up. Since the exhaust is aging a bit, though, I 'd like to know what replacement options are out there.

I believe Falcon & Monza exhausts can be had easily (not a fan of Monza), but are Bell exhausts still sold or have they gone the way of Ansa, etc? Any other manufacturers out there to consider for a TR4?

Thanks,
Randy

My buddy put stainless headers on his TR4a with a stainless exhaust. Very pleasing sound. He says that stainless headers are actually period-correct as an add-on so it won't detract from the value of the car.

FWIW, I just drove my TR3A to the local independant muffler shop & had him replace the muffler. The cost was very modest, less than just the parts from an LBC vendor and the result sounded great. Only took him about 30 minutes too.

Previous mild steel exhaust only lasted 20 years, so I might have had to do it again in another 20 ...

Yes, I've looked over prices and think a more conservative approach is what I need at this point. EDIT: (Need more coffee in the morning:smile: the muffler crack is right where it comes out of the frame. I will be eventually switching to a 4a manifold but I don't want to fit that right now so major changes to the exhaust system probably don't make sense.

I may just yank the resonator and see if it can be repaired at a shop, or buy a stock one as they are not that expensive compared to the performance systems.

Yup, these cars will nickel and dime you to death.

Here's a photo I saved from a recent ebay auction showing the set-up with just one big muffler:

You might want to consider replacing the resonator with a straight pipe. Moss sell one. I did it on my TR3 years ago and will never go back. The sound is perfect, just a touch more agressive than stock.

Just curious Geo, how high did that car auction go? Looks incredible in the photo.

Went to $21.6K w/o making the reserve.

Looks like a real nice car.. a few non-original touches but nothing offensive or irreversible. Auction is by a dealer who is possibly not intimately familiar with TRs:

"...fully rebuilt engine that has new big bore 83 mm. pistons and liners"

My guess is that the reserve was in the 25-30K neighborhood.

If you decide to go stainless, or have a system made up locally, I have a spare stainless downpipe left over from my TR3 restoration. Let me know if you're interested.

Thanks Mickey, but my downpipe is okay for now, and when I revamp everything I plan on going with a double downpipe with a 4a manifold. I already have those parts in carbon steel, and will need to tie them into a TR3/4 system right around the gearbox mount location. From the lengths it looks pretty close to a bolt-in modification but I won't be surprised if I need to haul to a muffler shop for some fabrication work.
