TR4/4A TR4 door checkstrap replacement.

Has anyone ever tried to replace the door checkstrap on a TR4? I can't seem to get it out .It has a spring clip that appears to be held on by some type of rivet that I can't remove? Any help would be appreciated . thanks
 
I replaced my checkstrap on my TR6 which I believe is similar (or the same) for the TR4.
Rivets have to be drilled out. I am sure you can probably
re-rivet them, but I chose to use machine screws lockwashers and nuts.... it was a lot easier.
 
They are not like a 6 at all.but you make the job easy in the same way as a tr6. First cut the old strap in half so the door can be removed/swung out farther. Then you can destroy the rivet.Be aware the new parts often come with METRIC threads if you try to re-use your old hardware you will come to grief!!!! The new parts look so nice for a year or two then go quickly to hades and must be refreshed every so often......

I just replaced my TR4 door checkstraps and used a machine bolt with nylon threaded bolts to secure them to the door. The checkstraps make a loud pop as I open or close the door. Do I need to replace the spring clip to stop this noise? If so how do it do that? Thank you.

There are two very different check straps used on the TR4. Early and late.
Which do you have? A picture would help.

Thanks for your response. The Moss part number is 803-030. They seemed to fit okay.

You have the late style. I have the early style which was changed mid production. Due to what I would call a poor design. So I am no help to you here.

I have changed lots of early style straps.The replacements are only so so at best.And offer the advantages
of metric threads so you can accidently ruin them with the old bolts.

Yours look like they should “pop” when opening and closing. The spring snaps over a step to keep the door open.

Attached is a pic of the "early style door check strap". I suspect you are referring to the late style. If not then where are you getting your replacements?

My Tr4 was CT143XX built April 62. Yes I had to change the early straps more often than
one would have wished.

Thank you for confirming the rivets have to be drilled out. My springclip broke, but the checkstrap is fine. So I'm going to use a dremel tool to carefully grind the face of the rivet flush. Then, they will probably pop out backwards with a light punch tool.
