TR4/4A TR4 diesels after shutoff

My '63 TR4 (freshly rebuilt) has always had a problem: once warm, it doesn't want to quit. After reaching normal operating temperature, when I turn the key off, the engine continues to cough and run (usually called dieseling, since there's no spark). I always turn it off and then let the clutch out to kill it. What's the root cause? I'm not running rich (checked with EGA).
 
Hi Derickson,Sometimes dieseling can be the result of engine heat and high idle speeds or improper carburetor settings.Sometimes it is prevalent in a fresh engine and will subside after its broken in a bit. However, it is detrimental to the engine and your present method of terminating it is in wide use by the LBC comunity.--Fwiw--Keoke
 
Not only did my 66 TR4A diesel on occasion, but once in a while it would start as soon as I turned on the ignition--without using the starter. I guess the engine was in just the right position, turning on the key triggered a spark, and away it went.
 
Not that the Crypt Car has that many miles driven
but Crypty always had a "dieseling" problem even
after new Jeff's new carbs, new dizzy, timing and
valve adjustment.

A tank of high test gasoline and the problem went away instantly. I'm on my second tank of high test and
the engine shuts down instantly.

I just rebuilt mine and went through everything and I still run on a little... I plan to get a colortune next and see if I'm a little rich.. I also have the idle at 1100 and that may be part of the problem...

Mine diesels on occassion. I have noticed that it is idling a little high becuase the accelerator sticks just a tad, so lift it with my toe and she idles down. I also wait about 10 seconds before I shut it off. If I do the above, she stops instead of dieseling.
