TR2/3/3A TR4 Air cleaners on TR3

Would appreciate any clarification of what I have read on some of the threads about alternative paper air cleaners.

Do the early TR4 paper cleaners fit the TR3 carbs AND clear the inner fenders?

Were the TR4 cleaners a complete disposable assembly, or were the paper filters replaceable? I see a replacement filter #3-176 (housing only pictured) listed on VB for TR3/4.

Hi Walter,

When I took possession of my TR3 it came with a pair of elliptical paper element air filters that looked like the filters being sold by VB for the TR4A.

The filters were one piece and they were replaced by a set of K&N filters, 56-1400, which I have been happy with.

I'm sure these will certainly out perform the originals but they seem a bit pricey. Perhaps worth the extra bucks if you drive on dirt roads or in areas prone to dust storms, but for us here in New England, the original air cleaners seem fine to me.

No, the round TR4 filters won't work, the front one hits the fender because the holes are centered not off set like the metal TR3 air filters.

Thanks, gentlemen. While I will never get rid of the originals (repros now), a little more filtration for the newly rebuilt engine would be nice, especially around sandy areas on the coast. Some folks use the shop vac foam band around the originals and that helps. The K&N concept seems very practical. A disposable paper filter would be good too and there are some good ideas out there. More to follow. Your information is much appreciated.
