TR2/3/3A TR3's - Windshields With Aeroscreens

Today I was talking to a fellow BCF'er (who really knows his way around the TR3) about running both the windshield and the aeroscreens (or the Brooklands) at the same time. His opinion was it couldn't be done, as there would not be enough windshield clearance.

Never having owned this combination, I really don't know, but I did see this picture - it is a print for sale on Ebay - and it clearly shows this set up.

Now, of course it's only a print, but....does anyone know for sure if you can, or you can't? Of course my car is an earlier 3A that does have the mounting holes so that's not a problem. Thanks in advance,

Simple - the plan would be to run mainly the aeroscreens, except in inclement weather. In that case, twist 4 screws, mount the windshield back on, and pop up the top. No need to crawl under the dash and unscrew 4 mounting bolts to remove the aeroscreens, which would make it a whole lot more complicated and time consuming. Plus it looks cool. :smile:
 
Back in the 50s, many TR2, TR3 and TR3A owners would drive to the track on race weekend, remove the spare tire, empty the trunk, remove the hub-caps and the windscreen (4 quick Dzuz 1/4 turn fasteners and drive the race with their aeroscreens on (well maybe at least one).

This only applied to the original S-T aeroscreens which were attached with two chromed hex-bolts up on the top of the skuttle.

This could not work, would not work and will not work with Brookland aeroscreens which require 4 sheet-matal screws to hold them on and the Brooklands cannot be used along with the full windscreen.

Notice that the glass is much larger and that the original S-T aeroscreens came with a rubber strip along the bottom (like on the full windscreen) to keep the rain and wind from hitting you in the face as the Brooklands do.

Tom Maddox in England has developed new repro S-T aeroscreens which can be used as they were intended.

So Don, if I understand correctly the answer is:
With Brooklands = no.
With T-R aeroscreens = yes.

I have a picture on my work laptop that shows a 3 with both the windscreen and aeroscreens installed (don't know what type). I will post it tomorrow morning unless someone posts the same pic.

Hey Bruce, Here is a couple of shots of my windshields.
It might fit with the big windshield on, but it will be a tight fit!
I have done the switch from Brooklands back to the big windshield a few times for the different looks. The four chrome bolts go into caged nuts under the dash. So you don't have to do the twist up under there. I did not use the mounts supplied with the Brooklands but got the different "feet" that you see in the photo.

I had a ebay set of repro aeroscreens on my last 3 (not as tall as the ones in Don's photo) - mine was a 3A and the holes I drilled were far enough back to have them mounted with the windshield. However, I never ran with both mounted because I found mounting and un-mounting the windshield to be a pain for one person and ran the high risk of scratching the skuttle.

Incidentally though, I used the black plastic plugs designed for holding interior panal in for modern cars to cover the winshield mounting holes - was there ever a purpose designed part for this or were they left open?

You can run the Brooklands aeros with the full windscreen. A guy in our club does it. All you have to do is get the mounting brackets located correctly. Once they are on, you never have to take them off, as there are set screws that hold the areos onto the brackets. Loosen those, and the aeros just slide out of the brackets. That arrangement however, seems to put the aeros too close to the steering wheel, so I wait until the windscreen is off, and then mount the areos into the brackets from the front.

I checked plate AM in the parts catalog and don't see anything there so I'm not sure. Maybe someone else can comment.

I've fitted Brooklands aeroscreens for a friend who wanted the ability to run both at the same time.

Put masking tape down on the scuttle. With the windscreen in place, position the aeroscreen and mark only the pedestal hole nearest to the cockpit on the masking tape. Remove the windscreen. Drill the marked holes then sit the aeroscreen back in place. Drop metal thread bolts into the drilled holes then mark the front holes.

I used metal thread fixings with lock washers, as I considered self tapping screws too risky with the wind pressure on the aeroscreens.

The factory aeroscreen mounting bolts on the scuttle were deleted at car TS32833. These suited the original type aeroscreens offered as an accesssory, and now reproduced by Tom Maddock in the UK.

The original aeroscreens had different pedestals (just one mount bolt) and higher glass than the current Brooklands type. Also, the original aeroscreens had a channel beneath for a section of windscreen rubber seal, but the Brooklands screens don't, so if you want the bottom gap closed off you have to glue a rubber strip on.

When I restored my TR the second time I drilled in new areo screen mounting holes and welded in the nuts underneath, The TRs that are pre ts32833 used a taller chrome bolt to fill the holes when the areo screens were not in use. By the way these bolts are hard to find. The mounting hole pattern was taken off of a pre TS32833. My TR is TS37148L, I guess I won't win at any concourse shows!
