Anybody running a roll bar(not the anti-sway bar on the front which some call an anti-roll bar). on their "3"? I have one on mine and was thinking of installing a third brake light on it so the semi's can see when I'm braking. . Anyone done this? Also where can I get an appropriate foam cover for it? Some say the rollbar ruins the lines of the car but esthetics aside if you slide into a curb and it goes over it, the crash might be survivable. Not that I push the car too hard or anything. Any thoughts on this?

This is my creation on my TR6, complete with welded-on third brake light and triplex glass wind blocker.

It does look good Peter? I dont think it takes away from the car at all. Where can one get that type of brake light and modulator?

Racer Wholesale.

Brake light modulator is the Back-off XP. It has three modes that all work at the same time. When I push the brakes, the main brake lights flash quickly 5 times then stay on steady, AND the center light flashes 3 times, then steady then the cycle repeats until I take my foot off the pedal. ALSO, I can switch 12V to the yellow wire which acts as an emergency flasher and the brake lights continually flash until I switch it off. The is great if you're on the side of the road.

It really is not overkill in the 3 because people don't even see you or your lights unless you slap 'em!

The light is a universal led light in a plastic housing. I used a sanding drum to cut out a round contour on the ends so that it fits close enough to the bar shape. I used black foam rubber garage door bottom seal (from Home Depot) to seal it against the bar. I drilled four holes in the bar: two for the wire (in and out) and two for the mounting screws.

I don't remember where I got the light (probably ebay) but I see them for sale all the time.

The setup looks really cool with the tonneau installed!

Bill,

What do you do so you can see with your rear view mirror. Lower it or just not use it?

I don't have as much restriction as you but wonder if you found a solution.

Right you are, Tom. I have restricted view of the rear so my next project will be to extend the arm down about an inch to lower the mirror.

I have some fairly strong opinions about roll bars based on having had one fabricated 10 years ago to CASC (competition) specifications.

1) In order to serve its purpose the roll bar should extend at least 2 inches above your head. If you are tall(ish) this will create a clearance problem for the soft top.
2) The roll bar should be padded, (or you should wear a helmet) so that if a car hits you from behind, which seems far more likely than a rollover, your head will not snap back and hit a bare metal tube.
3) The bar must be strongly mounted and braced, and should have plate of 1/4 inch steel as feet, and corresponding plates the other side of the sheet metal, through-bolted.

Given these considerations, and not wanting to drill mounting holes, I have decided not to reinstall a roll bar now that I am no longer using the car in competition.

I have considered removing my roll bar because it is a pain for rear vision and just in the way when there is not much space anyway.

The only reason I have not is I did roll my TR4 under conditions where I was actually under the speed limit and driving in a responsible manner. A rare occurrence in the 60's. Which further convinced me that driving fast and on the edge was safer. By the way, that was when you could still get a brand new body from the factory. And I did.

Maybe by the time I restore the interior I will have made up my mind whether to keep it or remove it.
