TR2/3/3A TR3A wheels - wire?

Folks - most of you know I've been disappointed with the bent original steel wheels I've got. They're beautiful, with original enameled hubcaps. But they wobble badly (bent at hubs). And I can't afford new Minilites, etc.

On my current wheels, I have new Kumho 165/80 radials with only 500 miles on them.

I've found a set of five original TR6 painted wire wheels for sale, including serviceable tires. Firestone P195/75R15 Deluxe Champion Radials with the whitewalls. Adapters and knockoffs included, plus Thor knock off hammer, and a Sunbeam British wheel wrench and cover.

Will these (wheels and tires) work on my car? Any caveats?

Thanks.
Tom

PS - I've tried to find at least one good steel wheel to replace my right rear wheel (it's got the absolute worst wobble).

I've now purchased three from different sellers who *swore* their wheel wasn't bent or wobbly.

Wrong. All three are BAD. So now I've got a goodly assortment of old original wheels which I'd recommend for use only as a spare.

Now I'm pretty discouraged from trying to find a "good" steel wheel, which is pretty much all I really need. Any suggestions always appreciated.

T.

I don't believe that combination (195/75 on 72 spoke wires) will fit under the fenders on a TR3A without substantial modification.

I run steel TR6 wheels on my TR3A, which I believe give a little less positive (outward) offset than the wires do (something like 1/4" to 3/8" per side); plus I've tweaked my fenders a bit, and my 205/55 tires still rub in turns.

Although your 195/75 are a bit skinnier overall (just 3/16" per side), the higher profile means they will stick into the wheel well about 1.25" more, which I think will give you some major interference.

Don't forget, if you switch to wire wheels, you will have to cut your studs, and switch to the special nuts to hold the adapter to the hub.

Hi There Nutmeg;

I`m not certain if I mentioned that I have "5" TR3/4 rims:

How true they are; I`m not certain but if your interested in buying one; Email or PM myself: I can have them checked for runout:

They currently have Michelins on them but I`m considering taking the tires off & posting the set on ebay: I may sell "1" rim & post the other "4" on ebay??

PM or email (toysrus@ptd.net) me with an offer incl. shipping:

Thanx, Russ /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif

PS: They`re painted "Old English White":

Tom,
I am having the same problem finding 4 good steel wheels for a 50 year old car. I do have some experience with wire wheels on an MG project an would recommend you stay far away from used wire wheels the splines may be worn and wires can become untrue easier than steel.

Excellent advice. I had wires on my MGB long ago; they weren't true and were a pain to have work done. No one in the area wanted to touch them.

But they did look nice!

Tom
