TR2/3/3A TR3A Turn Signal

I have a question regarding my TR3 turn signal. I always need to turn it off manually after a turn, except in cases where I've turned the steering wheel significantly to the left or right (such as in a U-turn). Is this an issue inherent with TR3s, was it built this way, or have the "return" teeth broken off over the years inside my steering wheel? I'm tired of other drivers telling me my turn signal is "on". It's like driving with my fly open.
 
Might be as simple as the self-cancelling cam not being locked to the steering wheel in the right position. With the wheel in the straight-ahead position, the fingers should point straight down, not up.

Of course the mechanism might be worn out or just dirty and gummed up (I had to clean mine every few years to keep it working), but if it always cancels after a U-turn, I think it's more likely the cam is out of position.
 
I think it's a common problem, but certainly not normal. Mine cancels sometimes and fails to other times, somewhat randomly. I never took the time to take it all apart and figure out what's going on.
 
If you take it appart the magic will escape!! Just be glad you have a working unit, and stop worring about excessive flashing after a turn....When it finally dies ,the replacements are a good product worth the expense.

Sounds like the stator tube is broken, a common cause of the turn signal not working. The top end has a notch cut in that fits around the end of a short tube connected to the steering hub, which is knurled to press fit and hold in place. Sometime the knurls get enlarged so that the stator rotates free. Or it could be just a matter of the three grub screws that hold the control head to the steering wheel are loose or missing.

Mark Macy produces a new tune in SS, it fixed my 58 problem.

AFAIK, Clive never got around to writing one (although perhaps someone else has ?) Anyway, IMO it's pretty easy to put back together once you've taken it apart.
 
I'll agree with Randall that with the article re assembly is relatively straight forward. The advantage of the article is that it shows all the pieces. Sometimes the disassembly results in thing flying out at the least opportune moment.

I have found on my TR3A, that a sweeping 90 degree turn from a multi lane road will not cancel the switch. If you make a sharp 90 degree turn and the self cancel works I don't think any thing is broken.
