TR2/3/3A TR3A Starter Problems - Help!!

i took the starter apart and try to spin the pinion gear and the motor did turn and the starter looks fine to me.

i had the battery tested and the battery is working find and has a good charge.

and as for the ground wire, i dont know if this is right but the neg ground is bolted to the firewall and then to where the starter is bolted

i have tryed just about everything i could think of, and everything my friends have
could some one send me a pic of there the neg ground should be?????

Hey congrats!

What did you do to get it running?

Tom

So what prize does Geo win?

You probably should be getting your money back on the "rebuild" dontchathink?

yup, all my problems due to a bad rebuilt starter.

what happen was i had a friend helping me with the starter then i removed the nose to see if it would spin, well my friend pulled out the shaft and thats when i noticed the gear wasnt working right. i am so happy now all i need to do is some little things and she will be like new.
i took her around the block to see if any thing else needs to be fix and it was great. she needs to be tuned up but thats it

thanks everyone for the help

you come out to indiana and you got that ride.

got a few more pics of my car, still have a lot to do to it but it rides so good. i took her out for a good ride and what a nice day it is for one.

now all i have to do is tune it up a bit, and put new tires on it. i added a few more pics so here a better look at my TR3 59

hope this post works

Charles - that is *good* news. Sorry 'bout the bad (?) starter rebuild, but you got it running and that's the important part.

I noticed your commission number. If yours was built on April 13, 1959 then we're cousins. Mine was April 9, 1959.

And from the pictures you've got a great looking car there. Congratulations!

Tom

Good to see photos with it outdoors... I like the personalized plate.

I know you're not ready to tackle 'little stuff' just yet but you might want to twist that gas cap so the tab is at 9:00 (i.e. pointing to the drivers side). That's where it is supposed to point and leavine it pointing rearward may allow it to poke the bootlid under some circumstances.

My TR4 has a nice ding from a misaligned gas cap... can't recall for sure if a TR3 bootlid caught in the wind could endure a simialr fate.

So Geo, how do you know the birthdate of Charles's car?

George - thanks for pointing that out. I noticed the problem (a bootlid ding about 1/2 inch long) on my own car, and wondered if the cap should be rotated a bit. Now you've confirmed my suspicions.

I'm also going to slide my bonnet a bit further down the hinge plates. When the bonnet is opened, the bottom scrapes against the vent cover. Not good.

Thanks.
Tom

Sounds familiar. The high pitch is the starter shaft it's self spinning at high speed and not engaging the ring gear on the flywheel. Did you grease it before installing? If so that may not be a good thing. Light oil only. Grease tends to bind up the clutch. Seems after a rebuild I greased mine and had trouble engaging. Local Triumph tech told me to remove and clean. Solved the problem for awhile. I've had my 3A on the road since 83 and had many starter problems. I cured it by installing a high torque starter. 10 years now and 0 problems!

Very nice, Charles. I like the mirrorless wing look.

What's the round thing on the dash between the ammeter and glovebox?

It was a guess... His commission # is close to mine which had a 4/15/59 (3:00 pm) build. Looked like about 2 days worth of production separating the two.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

A TRA member can get a Build Record for $20. I costs $25 to join TRA. The Build Record has about the same info as the BMHIT Certificate, but isn't fancy-looking. The BMHIT Cert is 40 pounds or something.
