Ok it was mow the lawn or pull the spare and get a close up look at that bracket.

Looks like I will need a new strap as well.

Tom,

The replacement belt sold by Moss in the catalog doesn't look right. It may just be the picture they show not sure. The tire hold down belt is one brass riveted together piece attached by a brass riveted loop in the belt at the top bracket. The belt tail with the holes goes throught the bottom bracket and then back up through and into the buckle. Guess that tells you how long it's been since I needed to remove the spare because I forgot how this thing works. The scratches at the top are caused by the buckle because the tire is a little too fat too fit.

Tom,

While sittin' on the lawn mower for the last hour or so I got to thinking about that top bracket I took a picture of. It came apart way to easy and the star washers used probably should be mini lock washers. I'm thinking the PO had them off and installed the belts back on in the wrong place. If that's the case then the one piece belt (pictured) holds the tools and the two piece belt holds the tire as in the picture in BP's Book and the Moss illustration. Hows that go? sorry, me bad?

Harry - that's excellent. Thanks for all the details and thoughts.

I'm interested in the Moss catalog picture too. Looks like the side belt (for the jack, etc.) is a single piece? The Piggott pictures on p. 57 sure seem to show a two-piece belt for the tire, and a two-piece belt for the tools. Wish he'd shown a closeup of those belt brackets, but from a distance it looks like they're *all* shaped with a substantial "lifted" area for the belts to pass through.

Maybe someone else can share what they've got for belts in the spare compartment.

Thanks again.
Tom
PS - as an aside, maybe this coming week I could convince TeeYah to take me out to your neck of the woods. I'd like an experienced TR3 owner to make a test drive and give me some feedback.

I haven't needed these belts since I finished my restoration in 1990. I never missed them. No TRA judge ever docked me points because they don't study inside here. When you want to pull out your tire, the belts get in the way and jam the removal of the tire. When they hang down, the buckle will scratch the paintwork under the opening. The belt on the side doesn't hold the tools tightly. They slide all over - back and forth - and scrape off the paint inside in this area.

I carry the tire tools in a heavy canvas bag in the center of my spare steel wheel. The wheel is outside down to give me a "deep dish" for these plus a spare overdrive solenoid, starter solenoid, and other small items.
