TR2/3/3A TR3A seat pan. Vinyl covered?

I pulled my drivers seat to work on the slides. My seat pan had a crappy piece of black vinyl applied around the sides and tucked under the pan and over the top edge. PO installed a leather seat kit from Moss. I assume this piece came as part of the trim. I peeled off what wasn't already loose and cleaned all the adhesive off of the pan. Then I painted the pan a matt black. This seems to me to be a better long term treatment. What do you guys have?

AS did mine..........

maybe I was a little harsh with my description.:highly_amused:
I dunno, most vinyl is pretty crappy after 50+ years of exposure and neglect. And I agree with George, the factory seems to have used vinyl here even with the leather facing option. In addition, the vinyl used appears to be the thinner vinyl, like that used on the dash. I'm not certain, but I think the factory used heavier vinyl on the seat cushion and back (when not using leather).

The seat pan actually takes a goodbit of abuse...always getting kicked and scratched. Vinyl will probably be much more durable than paint. JMHO

If there's a chance that the vinyl is original, it will be worthwhile to remove it as carefully as you can so you'll have some kind of pattern or, at least, reference, especially for those cuts used to stretch the material around the curves.

Like you I removed the vinyl trim around the pan and painted it too. Looked good but over time the edge of the pan cut into he seat covers. Just had new covers made and reinstalled the vinyl trim.

My seats pans were covered in vinyl, but when I redid the seats in leather, the kit from TRF came with extra leather to do the seat pans, so mine are now covered in leather...red leather. I don't think the pans would have looked good painted in red. As you can see in the pic, the thickness of the leather cased problems with the hinged seat not wanting to go back all the way. However, after it was sat in a few times, the problem disappeared.
