TR2/3/3A TR3A Rear Wing Clamp Installation

The rear wing clamps that I have are part number 602167, but I can find no reference to it in the parts books I have. I have a hand written note in the bag that they were stored in (my hand writhing) explaining where they go and why. Even with that I'm sitting here at a bit of a loss. If any one might have a picture of a mounted one I sure would appreciate it. A picture of it is attached.

Thanks, Tinkerman

Tink,

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I got one of those too, but haven't a clue where it goes. I'm almost positive that I did not take one off the car.

I posted a photo of one installed to BCF some time ago. Don't know the thread offhand, but you might poke around for it. Sorry I don't have it on this machine, but I'll try to post it again later tonight.

It goes up inside the rear fenders (one on each side). The captive nut gets the rearmost screw that goes through from the drip rail inside the trunk (boot) lid. The little tab on the end then clamps the fender corner at the top of the tail light platform tightly (one hopes) to the rear apron.

That clamp is held on by the rear most screw at the top of the wing inside the boot. The back slotted screw. It helps tighten the section of the wing that sticks beyond the boot.

Thanks for the help folks. The pictures helped a great deal. Jerry, once I get mine on, I will email or PM you a picture. That's assuming I get it on right and don't throw it against a wall in disgust, or despair.

Cheers, Tinkerman

Hardest part for me was getting seated in the right position; basically chest against the fender so I could reach inside with one arm and touch the bolt head in the trunk area with the other hand. After that it was easy.

Get the bolt started into the clamp first, rather than worrying about the clamp position (except of course the bolt has to go into the right side). Then with the bolt started, it's easy to turn and hold the clamp in position while you tighten the bolt.

OK, thanks to your pictures and looking at the fender and the rear section I finally have my head wrapped around the positionung and the purpose of the rear wing clamp. HOWEVER, Don, I noticed that in your picture I see you used round head screws and not hex head cap screws in that area of the wing/rear of the trunk mounting. Was that standard, did they not use hex head cap screws through out the installation of the wing? I know that the wing fitting kit I got from TRF are all hex head cap screws. Any thoughts Don, please.

Thanks, Tinkerman

The wing fitting kit that I got from Moss cantained 10 slotted screws for use inside the boot for attaching the rear wing. I took off slotted screws, and that's what went back on. I don't ever recall seeing anything else in there on any TR3.

Edit: I assume you're talking about my picture...I'm ART not DON...that's OK, I've been refered to by much worse!

The "round head" (actually they are much lower profile than ordinary round heads, more like a truss head) bolts are correct. The parts manual lists a washer under the heads, but apparently the factory did not put in washers either. Bolts are Stanpart 552433 (so not even in the standard hardware catalogue).

Hex head will work, but have a tendency to rub the paint off the boot lid.

TRF has good reproductions of the original truss head bolts (aka setscrews) complete with pointed tip for easier insertion (as original). But, the heads are very slightly different, just a bit taller and slightly smaller diameter. If you're a purist, you'd probably want to find originals in good condition; or at least use a full set of the repros instead of a mixture.

Are you sure that's a rear wing kit you are looking at? If so, get on the horn to TRF and tell them their supplier fouled up again.

When I ordered just the truss head bolts a few years ago, John Swauger called me up and told me that they were temporarily out of individual bolts, so he would pull them from a kit. Maybe you got that kit that he robbed !

Sheech, Mia Culpa, (knuckle to the forehead) Mia Culpa. Sorry Art. Though I'm with you I've been refered to the same way, in my time.

I guess that more research is in order. Because all of my wing kits came with hex head. Of course NOW I need to go back and look at them more closely. Mine came from TRF and they can't be wrong, can they? Can they?

Thanks for the info.

Always a possibility. I ordered some headlight trim rings from them a few months ago that turned out to be assembled with the clip in the wrong place. I know TRF has supplied correct ones in the past, because I see them on my friend's cars. When I called to complain, they checked the shelf and found that the entire shipment was assembled wrong.

To their credit, I got new, correct rings just a few weeks later. I did have to tweak the tab ever so slightly but otherwise they fit and look perfect.

Well, I was wrong, again. I found the proper rear wing fitting kit, both of them and they indeedy do have the round head bolts. I was rummaging around in the box I keep all my body fittings in just now, looking for something else and there they were!

Thanks for all your help!
