TR2/3/3A TR3A Rear Axle Help

That is basically the same hub puller that Volvo's of the same vintage used....

I bet we could fabricate some of these and pass them around.

At one time Francois was selling a puller for the TR6 Theguyfrom Quebec - I figured that would work on the 3/4's as well? - he's out of stock, but perhaps he can be persuaded to make another batch?

Hi Randy....

I know a guy.....

He has one of Francois pullers....I may have to check it out.

I really don't want to have to do anything to the hubs though if I don't need too....I am trying to stay away from the "wiit" dilemna.

Going to post some pics of the two sets of axles/hubs that I have tonight as I have a question regarding lubrication of the axle/bearings. Will read my manuals first though before I post to see if I can find the answer that I am looking for.

Cheers,
M. Pied Lourd

K guys,

Follow up questions.

Here are some pics of the two sets of axles/hubs that I have.

The top two photos came out of my parts car and the bottom one came out of my resto project. They all have varying degrees of lubrication from excessive to dry.

1st question....when I re-install the hubs/axles, should I clean (where required) and repack the hub bearing as best I can from the rear?

2nd question...I am assuming that I should just clean the splines on the end of the axles before putting them back in the axle tube?

3rd question...The hubs have the grease zirk fitted. Reading the Bentley it says to use 5 strokes on the grease gun during regular maintenance. I am assuming that this should be done after I I refit the axle and hub or is enough to repack the bearing as indicated in the 1st question?

4th question....can of worms I am sure.....recommendations on what type of grease to use.

Once again, thanks for the help.

Cheers,

I would clean the bearings as much as possible, and repack with whatever you use in your grease gun. Assuming you do a good job packing them, I wouldn't bother trying to add grease through the zerk until your next lube interval (I only do mine once a year, which is about 10-12k miles).

The remainder of the shaft, including the splines, can just be wiped clean. The splines will get lubed by the differential oil.

Those bearings seem to be very trouble-free in service (I've got well over 200,000 miles on what are probably original bearings), so I don't see any point in trying to extend their life with fancy greases.

However, I'd be suspicious of the ones that came off dry. It only takes a tiny, invisible spot of rust on a roller or race to create a weak spot that will gradually fail in service. And of course, any sign of roughness (preferably under as much load as you can apply) is reason enough not to use them.

Hi Randall,

Thanks for the info.
