Hello, listers, got my K&N filters 56-1400 from Moss this week, (#222-955), and I'm faced with a tight fit situation, wherein the front filter rubs on the engine side wheel well. I've added the Joe Alexander Racing heatshield, so that eliminated that little-extra space.
My first thought was to add a thin bit of vinyl between the filter and fender, but that was cut in two by the filter. Now I'm thinking of "shaving" a bit of the filter, and then bending in where the filter interferes with the inner fender. I was hoping to get the cool-looking pyramid-shaped K&Ns Moss offers, but was told that was for different carbs. Any thoughts?

We have the K&N 1-3/4" filters on our '58 3A and there is ample space between the front edge of the front filter and the inner fender panel. I would first suggest that you call Moss for their opinion. We purchased the K&Ns from TSI (Ted Schumacher) but they should be the same model as yours. I also have one of Joe's heat shields but haven't installed it because the studs on the manifold are a little too short to use the carb spacers, seat shield, nuts and split washers.

Our motor mounts are new so that's something worth looking into also to help your clearance issue.

Thanks, guys, brand new motor mounts (and gearbox mount, last week); unfortunately, Moss wasn't of great help, althought they tried. I saw a black '59 TR3A with those pyramid-shaped K&Ns at our latest Brit car show. The owner wasn't much help with those K&N's; it might have been too long... FWIW, I had no problem w/ Joe's heat shield. I had to Dremel™ just the slightest amount of 'shield so the linkage wouldn't foul the shield... (it shur is purdy).

Sorry, we saw "CARS" last night".

Hi Kevin,

Are those the deep 3 or 3-1/2" K&N filters?

If so, I think it's common on TR3 to need to "dent" the inner fender for clearance. (I know it's necessary with Weber DCOE carbs fitted with larger air horns and/or these deep air filters).

If you have any concerns about "reshaping" the fender slightly yourself, a good body shop can likely do it for you without much problem.

Sounds like a crude solution, but done right it looks fine and is really pretty reversible by anyone with auto body repair skills.

Kevin,

I had K&N filters with Webers on my TR-4. When I went back to my to my Stromberg carbs, I used the Weber K&N filters on the Stromberg’s (to cheap to buy new ones). What I did was mount the filters where they need to go for clearance. I then marked where the intake holes would have to be on the K&N plate that bolts up to the carb. (backside of filter). I then cut new holes into the plate so the carbs would mount with the proper clearance (the new and old holes might overlap). I then made a new back plate out of 1/8” aluminum, the same size as the K&N filter back plate. With the carb. holes drilled in their new location on the aluminum plate and the K&N back plate, I screwed and sealed with silicone the aluminum plate to the K&N filter back plate. You’re basically making an adaptor. It’s a lot of work, but you can move the filters up, down or sideways. Hope this makes sense.

Bill
