TR2/3/3A TR3A is on the road!!!!!

After 3 months and thousands of dollars, she's back on the road. Complete engine rebuild (the TSI "D" grind cam sounds great), complete suspension and steering, and a total interior to top it off! Saturday and Sunday were PERFECT down here in FLA -- mid 50s at night and mid to high 70s during the day without a cloud in the sky. Went to a car show in Jupiter on Saturday night (about 150 cars) and had a ball.

Anyway, a couple of quick questions to finish off this portion of the project.

1. How do you remove the headlight trim rings (to install the wire mesh guards)? There looks to be a small pin at 12:00 and 6:00.

2. Here's the scary one. I was told that I could convert the brake and clutch fluid from silicone to Castrol LMA, but when I bleed the clutch, it comes out gray. I have a sinking feeling that the rubber (clutch hose, master and/or slave seals) is already deteriorating.

3 or 4 different headlamp rims were used on TR3s but for most 3As you want to pull out on the lower (6:00) spot on the rim. A flat hook may help do this. The 12:00 rivet holds a bracket that catches on the upper lip of the lamp holder, the 6:00 rivet holds a tab that snaps into a pronged spring thingy. Once you have it off it will all be clear. Might put a spot of grease on the tab so it goes on & off easier in the future.

DOT5 loses it's color over time so the gray fluid may not be an issue... but why do you want to go back to original fluid? Not wanting to start a DOT3/4/5 debate here, just wondering.

If you do want to convert back then it would be prudent to replace the many rubber bits, otherwise you could just flush out the system with new (paint-friendly) DOT5 and see how you like it.

Glad to hear another 3 is on the road.

Congrats on the completion. You'll want to be careful with those headlight rims, especially if you have the nice heavier gauge originals. The securing mechanism is not very robust and the replacements are flimsy and pricey. After I hit a bump, one of mine flew off first onto a grassy area but then rolled into the street. It was unharmed for a few seconds until a big SUV flattened it to a very large washer.

Way to go! I was vacationing in Ft. Pierce (Hutchinson Island) and the weather was great over the weekend, but my TR-6 was at home in the garage under a blanket of snow.

Good luck with the clutch.
