TR3A in SE CT

Recent new member... Thanks for accepting me into the British Car Forum.

Bought a TR3A basket case about 6 months ago. Just getting started with the restoration on it now, Sept. 2021, with a friend/mechanic who also restored my 70 Spitfire. It is quite a project. Biggest issue is it has a TR4 engine and the carbs are higher than the hood/bonnet. Previous owner cut hole in the hood and added a TR4 ? bubble to the bonnet. Engine needs overhaul so may look for TR3 engine to bring it back to original configuration and get rid of the bubble. Will try to document most of my restoration on this site.

Bought my first LBC in 1967, a wrecked 64 Sunbeam Alpine. Rear end damage. Was in the Navy in Key West and had a couple of sailors fix it for $80. I bought a used boot lid for $40 in Ft. Lauderdale. Drove it to CT in 68 and wrecked it 6 months after getting here. Junk yard gave me $65 for it. Since then, I've owned a 72 (bought new), 68, 2-69's, and currently own a 70 Triumph Spitfire. There are only 4 Mk3 Spitfires with newer commission numbers.

Hello Retread

Welcome to the forum.

As far as I know the TR3 and TR4 engines are the same except the 4 had larger liners giving it an increased displacement. TR4 engines were fitted to TR3Bs with no bonnet bulge being needed.
Post your questions in the Triumph section. You will get plenty of tips and advice there for your TR3A project.

The engine front plate on the TR4 is different than the TR3. The TR4 is flat across the bottom and where it mounts to the frame which causes the engine to sit higher than the TR3 front plate which is also flat but angles up where it mounts to the frame which allows the engine to sit lower. I found a TR3 front plate, so the bulge/bubble comes off.

I'm now in search of a good used chassis cross tube (106191) which bolts to the top of each front shock tower horizontally in front of the engine. Rimmer Bros sells them but Moss does not. Due to cost and shipping, looking for a good used one. If you've got one...
