TR2/3/3A TR3A Headlamp Trim Rings

I have the late-style headlamp trim that clips in place and I have never been able to get the clips to hold very well. If the little tips on the bottom of the rings are straight up they don't engage the holders on the light fixture and if I bend them in they engage, but are rather loose. Its like the rings are hitting something, but I can't tell what.
Anyone else had this problem?

What I do is to stick a thin piece of metal through the gap between the inner and outer ring, to push that tab into it's clip. At least on my car, that leaves them snug. I use the other end of the same tool I use to remove the trim rings.

Aloha John,

The tool that Randall is refering to is something you could make, but is also offered by some of the usual parts sources.
Victoria British part # 17-829 or Moss Motors part # 386-080.
Here are some pictures,

Thanks for the information everybody. I'd seen that tool pictured in the service manual, but didn't appreciate how it worked.
