TR2/3/3A TR3A Front Oil Seal

I have my timing chain cover off to replace the tensioner, also replacing the chain while in there. I bought a new front seal too, but I can't get the old one out of the timing cover. The old one is a different design than the new one, the old one is more complex and has more metal to it, maybe original? I am afraid to beat on it too much because I might bend up the cover. It was not leaking too bad from the front so I am tempted to perhaps leave the old on in there, although I have beat on it just a little to get it out but it looks good and still has a tight fit on the pulley/balancer.

Any thoughts?

I'd go ahead and do what it takes to get the old one out. Find something to support the cover just outside of the seal hole (ISTR I used an old pipe fitting or maybe it was a big bearing race), then use a punch (or chisel) and hammer to drive holes through the old seal until it gives up.

You'll want to check the flange for flatness anyway, before installing the cover.

Aloha Vince,

In addition to replacing the front seal, also inspect the pulley hub for wear. Over time the seal can wear a groove into the hub and result in a poor seal and leak. Running a finger nail over the area where the seal makes contact can usuall detect a groove if it is there. If there is wear a speedi-sleeve will solve the problem.

Got mean with the old front seal and got it out. New seal installed in cover too. I also checked out the pulley hub per Dave's suggestion, lightly touched it up with some fine emory cloth and it looks very good.
