TR2/3/3A "TR3A" Engine Sequece Numbers?

Hi Folks;

I`ve been having some discussion with a TR3A owner relative to Comm #`s and Engine #`s:

He says that the Majority of Engine #`s were almost All higher No`s. than the Commission #:

Example: Comm # TS71369 / Would the Engine # be relatively close to the Commission # and Higher such as TS TS73416?

Who could give me some info on this?

Thanx for Your Explanation;

Regards, Russ /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/confused.gif

TR engines were also used in Morgans, Swallow-Dorettis and for replacement use. hence there were more engines produced than cars. Most agree that an 'orginal' engine should be within about 500 #'s of the TS #.

But there will be exceptions. The engine number on my TR4 is about 8000 lower than the commission number. Those are the numbers on the BMIHT certificate so I know they are original (and suspect I know what happened).

Also, they skipped about 2000 commission numbers when they implemented changes to the TR3A at the TS50000 point. Perhaps they just wanted the change point to be a distinctive number. I do not know if they did a corresponding jump in engine numbers (I doubt it) so that would have significantly closed the gap between the two.

My TS23677L has an engine number of TS24071E, which I believe to be original. I guess the only way to know for sure is to get one of those Heritage certificates.

A little sanding and a set of stamps and you can make the number right easy enough.

Just my 2¢ ...

On my British Heritage cert the commission and engine numbers appear as below. Same as on the car today.

Not w/i 500, but certified.

Russ: Yes. From my research, Triumph TR engine numbers were higher than the commission number and ended in the letter "E".

My 3A, TS/58476-LO has engine number TS/58681-E, thus a difference of 205 units. This is also as stated in the BMIHT Certificate.

Most of the cars that I have know as original, have between 50 and 300 units difference between commission number and engine. In your case there is a difference of over 2000 units, so perhaps this is not the original engine, but it is still possible. I have seen stranger things come out of Canley!

Hi Folks;

Well; I really do appreciate the input & education:

While I`m here; Check out the New Thd. on a TR6 scam on ebay: "HE`S BACK AGAIN": Can You believe it!
Curious! I thought all the TR3Bs had a "TSF" body number!? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/confused.gif
Andrew, I think you are correct and the Heritage sheet is incorrect. But as a novice I am not sure. My body number plate actually says TSF 308, not TCF as the Heritage Certificate lists.

Minor typos such as that are not unusual with those Certificates, given what I understand to be difficult-to-read copies of build records. I'm just glad to know that they DO have records for the TR3B, as I'd heard such information was somewhat scarce.

My 'certificate' doesn't have an engine #...I guess the guy with the pencil was on lunch when my car was finished.

I believe there were 2 series of TR3B's. The first was designated TSF and the second and slightly later version had commission numbers starting with TCF. I believe that the only difference is that the TCF cars had the larger TR4 engine and the TR4 fully synchronised gearbox. There was no difference in the bodies which were the same as late TR3A cars. My car is a TCF with the fully synchronised gearbox.

Well; I learned something so: /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thankyousign.gif

Now I can be a bit more educated in My TR3 findings:
