TR2/3/3A Tr3a distributor problem

Yes plugs were gapped to .025", my memory and numbers was never good. However, I have done some serious numbering since reading your post and I think you are on to something with mismatch between needles and jets. All the set up and working of the carbs is as it should be. First I noted that the jet is pulled up to the bridge to 0.31", this apparently is normal. Nothing sticks, all us smooth.
I have SM needles. They measure 0.90" and the jet which I tested with a 2.5mm drill bit ( a fraction less than 0.100" ) slides into the jet. A 2.4mm gauge I have for checking welding rod slides in and us sloppy. 0.90" is 2.29mm so there is no way it should even go I there let alone be sloppy. The drill bit points clearly to it being 0.100".

I didn't dismantle the jet from the carb as I thought it more straightforward for the supplier to send me the correct size needles this time. I bought whole rebuild kits from the leading UK experts. It is looking very much as though I got the wrong jet to needle size in my kit. It certainly explains why with the nuts turned fully up that the engine will idle steady at 900rpm and I can't get anywhere beyond rich with the colourtune.

Can an this mismatch really be the answer? Wow.

oil in crankcase checks out normal. No fuel overflow from the bowls.
Will get the 0.100" needles and let you know if you nailed it!

Not sure what happened, but SM needles should be very close to 0.100" when measured next to the base. That's why it's so tough to get the jets centered on them, there is very little clearance to the 0.100" jet bore. And obviously, that gap is what meters the fuel, so a .090" needle would allow way too much fuel.

I think you'll find things work much better when you get the right needles.
