Finished up putting in new rear brakes on my 3 and noticed that the breather valve on top of my diff was missing. In its place the previous owner had stuffed in some rolled up paper. Any ideas where I could find a replacement breather valve? Moss doesn't list the part. Could I just use a bolt to block off the hole?

Don`t block off the hole, the differential needs to breathe, That is the purpose of the vent. The "valve" is just a cap to prevent debris from getting inside.

If you can screw a bolt into the hole, you can remove it again and drill a 1/16" diameter hole down the center of the bolt, then re-insert the bolt and lock it in with some Loctite. It normally stands out about an inch above the casing.

Beat me to it, Don; I was going to suggest that. Perhaps you could take that suggestion one step further: drill that hole a tiny bit larger, then insert a split pin through it. Use one long enough so that you can bend the ends slightly to keep it from flying out yet leaving it free to move up and down a bit. That's essentially how the breathers were done on Herald and Spitfire, etc., differentials. Some movement of the pin helps (but doesn't always completely) prevent dirt and greasy grime buildup from plugging the hole and causing enough internal pressure to start forcing gear oil out where it shouldn't come out. (Much of the time, a plugged breather does cause what appear to be "leaks"; just freeing up the split pin by cleaning off the grime often takes care of 99% of the "leak"!)

Yep thanks for the tips, info. I just checked mine and I do have one but I bet it's plugged. I'll take it out and check it. The diff was rebuilt about 3 years ago but it hasn't been used yet so now is the time to check it.
