TR2/3/3A TR3A Boot Millboard Install

Hello friends. I recently purchased a replacement millboard for my 59 TR3A. The old millboard was more like heavy cardboard and has several scuffs and tears in the surface. The new one, from TRF, looks like "Masonite" with a covering of very thin black vinyl material. The millboard is secured in place with 10 chrome plated trim screws and cup washers. The replacement millboard came from TRF without any holes for the mounting screws. I tried using the old millboard as a template for drilling the new one. However, the shape of the new millboard was somewhat different. So, I was off enough to make it impossible to fit. I hesitate to drill new holes in the top and bottom sheet metal "flanges". Has anyone replaced one of these millboards and/or do you have any tricks or suggestions on how to accurately line up and drill the mounting holes?

Many thanks, Frank

I recently took mine out of my 3a to dry out the boot (trunk) after a racing in heavy rain.
the PO did a great job of making the new board out of thin plywood with thin carpet glued on. Top goes in first up against the central metal “flanges” with the outer “ears” above the wheel arch then push the bottom in on top of the boot carpet. It’s a tight push fit without any screws needed.

There are several ways to transfer the hole locations to your new board. The first that comes to my mind is to thread sheet metal screws into the tabs...backwards. You can then press the board up to the screw and push hard enough to leave a mark. Then drill a hole at each mark.

Use the old plate to re-shape the new one to fit. then drill holes where they go I use a little 80 grit
on a grinder. to whittle it down EZ PZ.

Hi Frank, Like Mad dog, I had to do goodly sanding to get the replacement boot board to fit, especially around the wheelwells. Final fit was nice and did like John to get the holes in the board to line up with the body flange holes.

If you use the boot at all , I suggest covering the finished board with black vinyl. Myself, I just start with millboard
from the lumberyard, and cut it with a jigsaw to shape. Sand it to size and cover it. Reminds me to buy some vinyl
today and finish my 59's boot......

Mine, with a medium thickness carpet on it, is like what Hamish has. Fit at top, push in at the bottom, no screws.

jfarris has the ticket, pressed mine into place after the covering was on it. Nice and tight ,no screws needed.
Going to make up some trims for the side panels with the millboard scraps since the vinyl on the wheel tubs
looks so sweet. It will look nicer than new.
