Yes, I believe a rivet secured with a sort of spring nut (can't think of the right name).

Would the bracket (black in the photo shown) have been body color originally?
 
My rod is riveted on and it took me forever to figure out that the crazy rattle i had was from the riveted connection. The nut and bolt seems to be a better idea.
