took the opportunity to refinish the timing cover (a lot of surface rust) by wire brushing it and soaking it in evaporust.
evaporust does a good job on rust, but doesn't remove old paint (good & bad).

Scraped & sanded the timing cover & water pump gasket base with a razor scraper & 2" sanding disc. Worked pretty well, but not sure if it is good enough.
also polished up the hose connections.
