Removed the timing cover to replace the oil seal and gasket. (However, still waiting on parts).took the opportunity to refinish the timing cover (a lot of surface rust) by wire brushing it and soaking it in evaporust.
evaporust does a good job on rust, but doesn't remove old paint (good & bad).
Scraped & sanded the timing cover & water pump gasket base with a razor scraper & 2" sanding disc. Worked pretty well, but not sure if it is good enough.
also polished up the hose connections.
